The Phoenix car accident attorneys at Wattel & York laud the efforts of U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and his implementation of Distracted Driving Awareness Month this April. The Secretary has announced the National Distracted Driving Enforcement Campaign, “U Text. U Drive. U Pay.”, as a means of cracking down on texting while behind the wheel. Secretary Foxx kicked off the new campaign on April 1. From April 10-15, drivers that text behind the wheel will feel the heat from both state and local law enforcement. During that time, officials will be aggressively ticketing distracted drivers in an effort to curb this practice. The campaign is accompanied by a major advertising blitz through television, radio and digital media outlets scheduled to run from April 6-15.

Statistics on distracted driving have been increasingly concerning, as rising fatalities indicate motorists are not taking the risks to heart in a meaningful way. DISTRACTED DRIVING DANGERS

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines distracted driving to include one or more of the following:

  • Visual distractions that takes eyes off the road
  • Manual distraction that takes hands off the wheel
  • Cognitive distraction that takes the mind off the driving task

Texting is particularly dangerous because it engages the driver in all three of these distractions. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, at least 3,154 people were killed in 2013 crashes involving distracted driving. Drivers texting behind the wheel are included in those numbers. Around 424,000 people were injured in distracted driving incidents. Both of those numbers show an increase from 2012.

While 45 states currently have laws against driving and texting, Arizona does not have any such law.  The last effort to introduce a bill in state legislature was voted down in February of this year. The state does ban texting by school bus drivers.

As part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, there are a number of recommendations drivers are encouraged to follow to lower the risk of distracted driving accidents. First, stop using cell phones while driving and take the pledge to drive cell-free. Use social media to alert others to the dangers associated with texting while driving. Tune into the other forms of distracted driving, such as talking on cell phones, eating and drinking, adjusting the radio, using a navigation system and watching a video.
