ATTEMPTED BRIBERY, ALCOHOL INVOLVED IN FATAL PHOENIX CRASH
May 3, 2018
A man charged with multiple crimes following his involvement in a fatal car crash attempted to bribe police officers at the scene of the accident, according to a statement from the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. The crash resulted in the death of a 27-year-old woman who rode in the passenger seat of his car when it rolled over during the accident. The woman was trapped in the burning vehicle and died. According to the statement, the 21-year-old driver, of San Tan Valley, AZ, “… pulled out a ‘wad of cash’ and attempted to hand it to the deputy and said, ‘It doesn’t have to be like this’” when officers arrived on the scene.
Drunk driving and other factors were involved in an accident which displayed the driver’s reckless disregard for safety and human life. Phoenix car accident attorneys from Wattel & York are committed to representing the victims of reckless and negligent drivers such as the young man in this case, who seem to display more concern for their cars than for their victims.
WATTEL & YORK REPRESENTS VICTIMS OF RECKLESS DRIVERS
At Wattel & York, we believe that those who have been injured or families who have lost loved ones because of drunk and reckless drivers are entitled to just compensation for their losses.
The actions of the driver in the above-mentioned crash are shocking. First, it is clear that heavy drinking led to the accident to begin with. The sheriff’s office reports that the driver had given the woman a ride home after a night of drinking. A blood sample taken at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital revealed a blood alcohol level of 0.148 %, which is almost double Arizona’s legal limit.
When officers arrived on the scene, the driver first tried to give them a false name and then attempted to bribe them. He apparently thought that there was an arrest warrant out for him in Texas and hoped to evade further consequences by giving the police a false name.
When questioned further about the accident, the driver seemed to express most concern about the fate of his vehicle, a vintage sports car. According to the statement, when deputies asked him about the crash, “his reply was he didn’t know what he was going to do because that car was his life.”
NEGLIGENT DRIVERS OWE JUST COMPENSATION TO THEIR VICTIMS
The driver was booked at Maricopa County Jail for manslaughter, bribery and false reporting to a police officer. Drivers who show a reckless disregard for the wellbeing of others and no remorse for their actions certainly owe their victims just compensation.
