CDC Report Shows Car Crash Injuries Costly and Rampant

by on November 12, 2014

According to grim statistics compiled by the CDC, motor vehicle accidents send some 2.5 million people to the emergency room each year, with nearly 200 of those victims are hospitalized. That breaks down to roughly 7,000 ER visits every day due to traffic accidents, reports the principal deputy director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The data reflects nationwide car accidents in 2012, which resulted in lifetime medical costs of $18 billion for serious car crash injuries.

“Motor vehicle crash injuries occur all too frequently and have health and economic costs for individuals, the health care system, and society.  We need to do more to keep people safe and reduce crash injuries and medical costs,” said CDC Deputy Director Ileana Arias, Ph.D.

CDC report indicates costly nature of motor vehicle crash injuries

To gather data for this “Vital Signs Report,” the CDC used the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System-All Injury Program and the Nationwide Inpatient Sample to review all ER visits stemming from traffic accidents during 2012. Researchers analyzed the rate and number of all car accident injury-related emergency room visits, length of hospitalizations, and the associated lifetime medical expenses.

While the data showed 5,700 fewer hospitalizations and a significant drop in ER visits for auto crash-related injuries in 2012 compared to 2002, the report also gleaned the following numbers, which indicate the costly nature of motor vehicle collisions.

  • An individual injured in a car accident will spend on average $3,300 for an ER visit and a whopping $57,000 in hospital costs over their lifetime.
  • The first year and a half following a car crash injury are the most expensive, when victims incur 75 percent of all medical costs.
  • Teens and young adults ranging in age from 15-29 are at highest risk for suffering personal injury in auto accidents.
  • Elderly drivers or passengers (at least 80 years old) who were harmed in traffic accidents were more likely to be hospitalized.

The CDC report also indicated that in 2012, Americans lost $33 billion in work income due to crash related injuries.

Though the causes of motor vehicle accidents can range from DUI to distracted driving or driver fatigue – the ramifications of such negligence last a lifetime. Other factors such as auto manufacturing defects (defective air bags or malfunctioning brakes), hazardous roads and inclement weather can also contribute to a deadly accident in the blink of an eye.

If you have been harmed in an auto accident in the greater Phoenix area and are wondering who is liable, an Arizona personal injury attorney can help you determine who is at fault and the potential value of your claim.
