Recent Spate of Serious Car Accidents in Phoenix Area

by on December 19, 2014

Phoenix is Arizona’s largest city and with population growth rates skyrocketing, more motorists are hitting the city’s already congested roads and freeways, leading to an increasing number of traffic accidents that disrupt and claim innocent lives.

If you or someone you love has been injured in a motor vehicle collision in the greater metropolitan area, it’s important to preserve your legal rights. Consulting with highly experienced Phoenix truck accident lawyers can put your case on track to financial recovery. Wattel and York works diligently to ensure that car accident victims obtain full compensation for any medical bills, lost income, property damage and other, less tangible losses that result from a negligent or impaired driver.

Brian J. Knoll of Phoenix was arrested following a fatal chain collision that closed down I- 17 during busy commuting hours this past Wednesday. The 22 year-old was booked on suspicion of second-degree murder in Maricopa County jail after his flatbed truck plowed into vehicles that were stopped on the interstate. Investigations in the case are still underway.

Arizona resident Edgar Martinez was recently sentenced for causing a Phoenix car crash in which a three-year old boy was killed. Nineteen year-old Martinez was driving northbound near 31st Avenue and Acoma Drive at excessively high speeds when he veered into the oncoming lane, smashing head-on into a Nissan, which was carrying three kids, ages 3, 5 and 11. Martinez’s vehicle rolled over, while the Nissan was forced backward.  Police suspected that Martinez was impaired by drugs at the time of the collision. Records show that he had watery and bloodshot eyes, an elevated pulse and dilated pupils at the scene of the crash. And court documents state that Martinez later admitted to using marijuana.

Martinez pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and negligent homicide. On December 5, 2014 he was sentenced in Maricopa County Superior Court to five years in prison and an additional five years of supervised probation.

In a separate incident that caused several vehicle accidents in the vicinity of Thomas Road and 15th Street, a 77-year-old woman died of unknown causes when behind the wheel. Officer James Holmes, a Phoenix police spokesman, said the elderly woman first hit a motor scooter, causing the driver to suffer minor injuries.

The woman’s uncontrolled car continued east, crashing into a Chevrolet truck, before crossing a 16th Street intersection and smashing head-on into a Chevrolet Malibu. The impact forced the Malibu backwards into a privately owned school bus, which thankfully wasn’t carrying any children. While none of the other drivers suffered serious injuries, the accident caused a good deal of property damage and highlights the risks faced by motorists every day.
