New Treatment for Damaged Spinal Cords Gives Hope to Accident Victims

by on March 23, 2015

The Phoenix catastrophic injury lawyers at Wattel & York are excited to hear about new scientific advancements in the regeneration of nerve cells in damaged spinal cords and other potential improvements in the treatment of spinal cord injuries. However, many people who have suffered serious spinal cord damage remain burdened with enormous therapy and rehabilitation costs and other treatment expenses, in addition to the diminished quality of life that accompanies limited or lost mobility and motor skills. When a life-altering injury was the result of someone else’s negligence – such as a reckless driver or property owner, or because of an assault or a construction site fall – victims may feel angry and powerless. But hope exists not only in regular advances in the treatment of spinal cord injury, but in the fact that the law is on the side of victims of negligence. Seeking justice for your injury through the legal system can not only empower you and your family, but help you secure the monetary compensation you need and deserve as you continue the long and difficult recovery process.

If someone else’s negligent acts or omissions caused your injury, contact Wattel & York as soon as possible, since strict time limits exist in regard to filing personal injury lawsuits in Arizona. You may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, property damage, lost wages, loss of the ability to earn income, pain and suffering, loss of companionship and more. All consultations with attorneys at Wattel & York are free of charge and come with no obligation, and clients owe us no fees unless we win your case.

Cancer drug stimulates nerve cell regeneration

A global team of scientists have published a study in the prestigious journal Science in which they demonstrate the positive effect that the cancer drug epothilone had on reducing scar tissue that forms after spinal cord injuries. Epothilone was also shown to generate growth in nerve cells damaged due to the injury. As a result, neuronal regeneration increased and the animals tested demonstrated improved motor skills. Damaged spinal cords usually fail to heal because the regeneration of the nerve cells is inhibited by scar tissue and other impediments.

Generally, most nerve cells in the body – such as in the arms, legs and chest – can heal after an injury and return to regular function. Nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord do not recuperate as easily, and often fail to regenerate after an accident or the effects of disease. This lack of regrowth often leads to long-term paralysis and other complications.

Epothilone has proved more successful than other drugs tested because it is capable of transversing the blood-brain barrier and entering the central nervous system. The next step for researchers is to test how epothilone performs in the treatment of lesions in animal subjects.
